West End salon owner recognises Glasgow women who are a cut above the rest

F ive women have been recognised for their outstanding contribution to life in Glasgow at an awards ceremony created by a West End beauty salon owner.

‘Women Better Glasgow’ has been the brainchild of mother-of-three Sam Younis, the owner of Oceanic Hair and Beauty in Park Road.

Sam wanted to recognise the achievements of women in the city after she and her staff were inspired by the experiences of customers.

The recipients of the inaugural awards were fashion designer Kelly Mcgrath, Commonwealth Games Judo champion Louise Renicks, founders of Tea in the Pot Anne Keegan and Anne McGhee and Faten Hameed, the founder of the Scottish Iraqi Society.

The women were presented with their awards by the city’s Lord Provost, Sadie Docherty, at a ceremony in the Crowne Plaza Hotel last week.

Before presenting the awards, the Lord Provost spoke about the issues facing women today and described the obstacles she had to overcome as a mother and grandmother.

She also stated that there are far too few women councillors in Glasgow and expressed her belief that the involvement of more women would have a positive influence on politics at all levels.

Sam said: “We at Oceanic Hair and Beauty are speechless with the response we received to our first Women Better Glasgow Campaign.

“I understand only too well how much time and commitment it takes to be a working mum.

“We started this campaign because the staff in the salon heard the amazing stories of women in Glasgow.

“The customers, many who have become friends, spoke of the hardships they faced and the tenacity, and courage they showed.”

“We thought long and hard about how we can capture these great stories and showcase them to the wider audience.

“We wanted to do this in a way which we felt would not only celebrate their achievements, but also raise awareness of the difficulties many women face in their daily lives.

“We were aware of the People Make Glasgow initiative but wanted to prove that Women Better Glasgow.”

Customers and their friends at the salon were asked to vote on social media for inspirational women and it just grew from there over a three-month period.

The awards eventually ended up with nominations for 91 different women.

Sam said: “We started this campaign online encouraging people to nominate inspirational woman, we spoke to our client base and more recently we took the campaign out to various events in Glasgow.

“The results were amazing. However, more importantly, we found five gems who need to be applauded. We choose five winners because we wanted to celebrate the diversity that Glasgow has to offer.”
