Nico chef Modou Diagne to open debut restaurant in the West End next month

By Ian Marland at

Talented young chef Modou Diagne will open his debut restaurant, 111 by Modou, in Glasgow’s West End next month.

The restaurant located at 111 Cleveden Road was slated to open in March with plans put on hold due to the Covid-19 crisis.

Work is currently under way to transform the former 111 by Nico into a cool, brighter and more airy dining space.

Chef Modou

Chef Modou will open 111 by Modou next month.

The 46 cover restaurant will open with a reduced capacity of 28, and feature an open kitchen and stylish, contemporary artwork.

The reins to the popular restaurant were handed over to Modou by his friend and mentor Nico Simeone earlier this year.

The 26-year-old chef arrived in the UK from Senegal seven years ago with only £200 in his pocket.

He has worked his way up with Nico over the years quickly from kitchen porter to head chef.

And in March 2020, Nico offered him the opportunity to make his mark in the industry under his own restaurant brand.

Modou Diagne said: “Having moved here in 2013, I would never have dreamed that I would be in this position seven years later.

“I am more than ready for this next chapter at 111 and I look forward to showing everyone in the industry what I can do here at 111 by Modou”.

He said: “Throughout lockdown I was busy helping my mate Nico cook and prepare the ‘Home by Nico’ kits and had the chance to give something back to the community who helped and supported me from the moment I arrived in Glasgow.”

Chef Modou and Nico

Chef Modou has helped Nico Simeone build up his restaurant business.

Modou helped provide emergency food and support to some of the most vulnerable people during lockdown, cooking weekly meals for St Gregory’s Church in Maryhill, Glasgow.

At his new restaurant, the popular ‘Total Trust’ concept – that Modou and his team were at the forefront of pioneering at 111 by Nico – will remain.

‘Total Trust’ will be available every Sunday priced at £23 per person and offer a five course menu designed entirely by the chef’s choice of ingredients on the day.

Modou said: “This city and the people who live here have welcomed me with open arms and I am forever grateful.

“It’s an exciting time in my life and I can’t wait to have the doors to 111 by Modou open.”

111 by Modou will open mid- August 2020 at 111 Cleveden Rd, Kelvinside, Glasgow G12 0JU.

The restaurant will be open every Tuesday – Friday from 5pm – late and Saturday’s and Sunday’s from 12pm.
